  • A local solution to a global problem

As commodity prices continue to rise the problem of metal theft is not going to disappear

Midlands-based company Alcomet Limited, supplier of electrical earthing materials and components specifically for electricity substations, is pleased to announce an unprecedented growth in recent sales despite the UK’s economic downturn.

Managing Director, Gary James welcomes the surge in sales which in many ways echo a change of culture in both the utilities and railway sectors. He believes that his company’s current success reflects a commitment to safety, security and the need for large organisations to save money where they can.

For the last three years Alcomet has been working successfully with engineers representing  electricity utility companies to find a solution to combat copper and aluminium theft at electricity sub-stations. As the company’s mission has been accomplished the problem of stolen precious metals continues to spread as it is now affecting a far more diverse range of sectors.

Alcomet’s Guardian Security Product Range won a Queen’s award in 2009 for innovation and an E.ON Changing Supplier Award for People and Culture in 2011 for its effectiveness as a metal theft deterrent.

Mr James said: “We are obviously delighted with the commercial success we have received through the development and launch of the Guardian which was done collaboratively by working with engineering professionals in the electricity power generation and transmission sector. Its adoption by key clients within that sector has elevated the Guardian’s effectiveness and led to its inclusion into many procurement specifications as mandatory policy which has been fantastic for us.

“Sadly the problem is on the rise and it’s not just confined to the UK as other European countries are being plagued by thieves removing earthing materials from sites compromising safety and security. The problem doesn’t stop there as many global economies are fighting the battle of metal theft which is being compounded by the rising prices of aluminium and copper.”

The variety of sites and installations where the Guardian range is used continues to grow and has now extended to protect lightning conductors on communications masts and water treatment tanks.
