Bentonite Moisture Retaining Clay

Bentonite is used as an earth-electrode backfill to reduce soil resistivity by retaining moisture. Designed to be mixed with water to produce a moisture retaining clay which lowers the resistance to earth.

The clay consists largely of sodium montmorillonite, which when mixed with water swells to many times its dry volume. It has the ability to hold moisture content for a considerable period of time and to absorb moisture from the surrounding soil such as rain fall.

Alcomet can supply Bentonite in granules or powder form.

  • Granular is used for filling trenches where the conductor is covered with Bentonite, then water is poured over and mixed into the trench.
  • Powder is used for pouring into bore holes to make sure the mixture is thin enough to reach the bottom of the bore hole.
